The Extended Essay
The Extended Essay is a perfect opportunity for you to engage with your interests through an interdisciplinary approach, combining
knowledge and perspectives from two Diploma Programme subjects. By making connections across disciplines, you will investigate
complex, real world issues that cannot be fully understoof through the lens of a single subject... It is written in the style of a university
dissertation, being presented formally with a clear research question, structured argument, referencing, bibliography and page
numbers. The maximum length is 4,000 words.
At our college, all students follow the Interdisciplinary Extended Essay pathway. This means your research will intentionally
draw on two subjects, allowing you to explore complex real-world issues from multiple perspectives and develop a more holistic
understanding. The Extended Essay is intended to develop high-level research and writing skills, critical thinking across disciplines,
intellectual discovery, creativity and the academic writing skills expected at university.
Each student has their own supervisor, whom they meet individually for advice on planning, researching and writing, but the essay
remains very much their own work. Supervisors support students in making meaningful connections between their chosen subjects
and in developing a clearly focused interdisciplinary
